The Manyelethi males

This is one of a group of three very impressive male lions known as the Manyelethi males. Lions sometimes form coalitions - especially brothers - in order to better protect their territories from foreign males. The Manyelethi males' territory covers most of the northern section of Mala Mala, encompassing a number of prides of lionesses, and they have held out against numerous challengers over a number of years, consequently siring many offspring.

LPlaytime!ions are the most social of the cats. The nucleus of the lion pride is the female, with the adult males being mostly nomadic, wandering from pride to pride in their territory seeking out any females in oestrus. This pride (right) is known as the Styx pride and is often seen in the area around the Mala Mala main camp. There are three subadult males in this pride who will inevitably be kicked out by the dominant female as soon as she feels they have outgrown their welcome. Thereafter they will have to fend for themselves.

White rhinos are more likely to be seen in groups than the black rhino, which is strictly solitary. RhinoThis group consist of a mother and calf and most likely a young, unrelated female. Young females often join up with other adult females with calves after leaving their own mothers. Young bulls, on the other hand, often join up with each other since adult bulls can be very aggressive towards intruders in their territory.
